2021 Dr. Bogalech Gebre ACLP Fellows

The Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC), in collaboration with the African Civil Leadership Program (ACLP) and the Civil Society Resource Center (CSRC), is focusing on a program dedicated to supporting the Commission’s human rights investigation and monitoring work.

The deepening human rights crises and widespread reports of conflict and human rights violations in the country require urgent attention. Due to the development of this humanitarian crisis in Ethiopia, The EHRC has taken on eight fellows to work within and assist its different departments.

Elshaday Getachew

My name is Elshaday Getachew, I am 24 years old. I received my LL.B in Law at Addis Ababa University, School of Law.

I have worked as a Paralegal at the Ethiopian Women Lawyers Association and Addis Ababa University School of Law in the widening access to justice through legal education where I rendered legal advice, drafting legal documents to indigents, and mediated parties in dispute. I have also worked as a Legal Officer at Includovate Pty. Ltd where I reviewed contracts, formulated several policies, and conducted legal research. Moreover, I have worked as a Research Analyst at Young African Change Makers, where I conducted research on the economy, demography, culture, and religion of selected African countries. I am currently working as an Associate Editor at the People’s Accolade Law Magazine in which I contribute content to be published, develop content ideas and publicity strategies that would help achieve the aim.

My hobbies include volunteering in my community. I have an interest in human rights, international trade, and development works.

Makda Asrat Dejene

My name is Ms. Makda Asrat Dejene, I am 28 years old. I received my LLB degree at Addis Ababa University. I am also a certified alum of the University of Delaware in Civic Leadership; the University of Kenyatta in Business Entrepreneurship; the Academy for International Business Officials in Business Culture Integration and the IGAD Centre of Excellence for Countering and Preserving Violent Extremism and Radicalization in Advanced Strategic Communications.

I have worked as a Communications Consultant at SEED IT SOLUTION PLC; CANVAC Administrator at IOM, UN; Public Relations Officer at ZTE (H.K) Limited Ethiopian Branch and as a Commercial Assistant at the Embassy of Czech Republic in Addis Ababa.

I have a high interest in all community development sectors and volunteerism. Covering global challenges like climate change (via Zero Waste activities) and human rights issues (Advocacy on gender equality; Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights; Peace and Security to mention a few). Accordingly, I am a nationally and internationally acknowledged servant leader for my proven, measurable and sustainable impacts through different initiatives in my community.

Eden Derese Bekele

My name is Eden Derese Bekele, I am 23 years old. I received my LLB degree in Law and Governance Studies at Addis Ababa University.

I have worked as a Data analyst/Desk Officer at the Ethiopian Women Lawyers Association (EWLA), as a paid Paralegal Intern at Transparency Ethiopia, as an Assistance Office Manager and Training Coordinator at Vision Ethiopian Congress for Democracy (VECOD), as a paralegal at AAU Legal Aid center, Lideta and Kera first instant courts.

I have an interest in international law, Refugee law, Human rights, and Humanitarian law.

Meraf Admasu

My name is Meraf Admasu, I am  25 years old. I received my  Bachelor’s degree in  Law and Governance at Addis Ababa University.

I have worked as  Media Monitor at CARD (Center for Advancement of Rights and Democracy), I have had the opportunity to work with different community-based organizations in my years as a University student.

I have an interest in Human Rights, specifically, children’s rights and policing.

Lidiya Musse

My name is Lidiya Musse I am 25 years old. I have an LLB in Law from Mekelle University where I was a member of the school of law legal aid.

I served as an intern at the Ethiopian Institution of the ombudsman and Attorney General of Ethiopia. I have also worked at the federal justice and legal research and training institute and TRIBOND Research Consulting PLC as a data collector for the Facebook Company. I also served as a compliant investigator in the 2021 national election of Ethiopia. I have an interest in gender equality and human rights.

Andualem Getahun

My name is Andualem Getahun, I am 30 years old. I received my LLB in law at Adama University. I have worked as a lawyer and legal advisor at Transparency Ethiopia.

I have an interest in research, volunteer work, and human rights activism.

Genet Tebeje

My name is Genet Tebeje, I am 25 years old. I received my LLB degree in Law at Samara University. While I was still at university, I worked at Addis Ababa University’s Human Rights Center and the Legal Aid Office at Afar Regional State Samara town branch as a paralegal. After graduating from law school, I worked as a trial monitor officer at a local CSO named Consortium of Ethiopian Human Rights Organization (CEHRO) where I monitored the human rights violations of prisoners who have been suspected of a certain crime on pending criminal cases.

I have an interest in human rights. Specifically, Refugees’ and IDP’s rights.

Adam Denekew

My name is Adam Denekew Mekonnen, I am 25 years old. I received my LLB degree from Bahir Dar University in 2017 and LLM degree in Business and Corporate Law from the same University Bahir Dar in 2020.

I was an assistant lecturer of law at Aksum University in August 2017, and a lecturer of law at the Bahir Dar University School of Law in September 2018.

I am particularly interested in human rights law and Ethiopian/World history and politics. My hobbies include reading, philanthropy, and participating in volunteer activities.

Samuel Worku

My name is Samuel Worku, I am 25 years old. I received my LL. B Degree in Law at Addis Ababa University.

I have worked as a Training and Legal Aid Officer at Center for Human Rights of Addis Ababa University; a Research Assistant at Addis Ababa University College of Law and Governance Studies; a Human Rights Researcher at Combating Disinformation and Human Rights Violation through Fact-Checking and Investigative Reporting Project and as a Research Associate at Institute for Education, Health and Development PLC.

I have a high interest in Human Rights, Criminal Law and Peace and Conflict Resolution.
